About us

Meet the Cats

Cats are independent, hairy, and picky animals. So are the four members of S. T. Cats, always roaming around looking for food and wine. After all, what could you expect from a gang of Italian folks?

S. T. Cats is an Italian and International cover band in the San Diego area.

Cristina is the queenly cat and the singer of the band. Her voice ranges from a sweet purr to a scratchy meow (when someone steals her Aperol). Supporting Cristina, three wild felids that, if was it not for the education they received, would be wandering across the mountains of Italy: Matteo, from the lands of Peroni, is the laid back cat with the rock guitar; Federico, from the lands of Grappa, is the playful cat with the jazzy bass; and Carlo, from the lands of Prosecco, is the nonchalant cat on the funky drums.

We dive into the last decades of Italian and international music to bring you both good-old classics and new upbeat melodies. Your nights with us will be fun, sweet, nostalgic, and crazy: we do it all.

Come see us โ€“ look for furry animals wearing 80โ€™s party glasses!

Cristina Zalfa

Bio

Born in Turin and raised near Milan, Cristina always had two main interests: music and science. After getting her PhD in Biology, she worked for a few years in Italy as a neurobiologist. Cristina moved to San Diego in 2017 and she isย  now working as a researcher in cancer immunology.

Musical background

Cristina began as a self-taught guitarist when she was 12. A few years later, she joined different rock bands, where she got into singing and writing original songs. She then took singing classes, choral ensemble, scenic art, and elements of complementary piano and guitar. Cristina participated in many music projects over the years.
With her last band, Even, she recorded an original LP, and released an official videoclip. She also participated in music contests and festivals in many places in the north of Italy and wrote songs for other artists.
Cristina has always been socially engaged: she partnered with Officine Buone, a nonprofit association, where she played as a volunteer in hospitals, using her music as a tool to bring happiness to people.

The Drummer

Carlo Freschi

Bio

Carlo was born and raised in the province of Treviso, he grew up playing soccer and kept playing until he moved to a different city for his undergraduate studies. He studied business in Padova and worked in the Marketing field for a few years, until he moved to SD in 2010 for his graduate studies. He has lived in Americaโ€™s finest city since then.

Musical background

Carlo randomly approached the drums when he was 15 y/o at a Christmas event where some family friends played a small show. His first influences were the classics of rock, but he soon started experimenting with instrumental music in a local band that mixed influences of blues, jazz and funk. He played with his first band until he moved to SD, adding over time a number of cover bands ranging from Ska to blues and funk, and of course rock. After a couple years without playing in SD, Carlo joined a few bands (both covers and originals) and had the chance to play a few shows around town.

Matteo Mori

Bio

Born and raised in Rome, Matteo grew up surrounded by science books and music. After studying Physics in Rome, he got fascinated by the complexity of living beings and got a Ph.D. studying cellular physiology and metabolism in bacteria. He moved to San Diego in 2016, where he works as a researcher in systems biology at UCSD.

Musical background

Matteo started playing guitar at 16 when forced at home by a chest cold, and never stopped. Over the years, he sang and played guitar or bass in several bands spanning many genres, including R&B, funk, progressive rock and metal. However, the first band he was a member of was an Italian cover band with his father, not too different from S.T. Cats! He also plays a variety of other instruments such as drums and keyboards. During the 2020 lockdowns, he has been involved with some collaborative covers with people all around the world.

Bass Player

Federico Zampa

Bio

Fede was born and raised in Friuli-Venezia-Giulia, a cute and quiet border region in the North-East of Italy. Here he completed his studies in Biotechnology and Neuroscience between the cities of Udine and Trieste. He then moved to Germany for his PhD and, after a short stay in the Netherlands, he moved to SD in 2018 to enjoy the well-deserved endless summer.

Musical background

From the very beginning, Fede was bombarded with 60โ€™s, 70โ€™s and 80โ€™s grooves played by his father. As a beardless teenager, he joined the band of his father as a bass player, returning the groovy favor. During the following decade, he toured the Italian north-east playing oldies, funk, progressive rock, and singer-songwriter songs. Together with friends and band members, Fede organized, directed, or played in 3 music festivals. With his alternative-prog band โ€œsowhat?!โ€ he won regional music contests and recorded an album (โ€œDachsundโ€, on Soundcloud). When in Germany, he took jazz lessons and shifted gears to classic jazz and jazz fusion. Now in SD, Fede is still beardless, but he found three nice cats and started recording his solo album. Stay tuned!
